Zinc replaces environmentally hazardous lead in fishing gear
Lead is a toxic heavy metal that affects the nervous system and can reduce children’s learning ability. It is also toxic to water and soil organisms and accumulates throughout the food chain, including marine life and is therefore damaging to the environment.
This is why Danish company Linimatic has developed a new type of sinker for fishing gear. The project was supported by The Danish Environmental Protection Agency and was prepared in cooperation with researchers at DTU, the Technical University of Denmark.
The end result culminated in Zinkers, which are made of die-cast zinc and shaped like the ring-and barrel sinker used on a vast array of fishing nets.
Die casted Zinkers will last 5-6 times longer than the equivalent lead sinkers. This means that the fishing gear also lasts longer. The zinc sinker therefore provides significantly better overall economy despite a slightly higher manufacturing price.
Sales and Finance director Torben Levinsen from Linimatic says: “Our new zinc sinker has been tested under real conditions for some years now. Both Fishermen and fishing gear manufacturers confirm that the Zinkers last longer than the old and environmentally harmful lead sinkers.
This is primarily because Zinkers are manufactured by high pressure injection molding, ensuring a non porous product with high density integrity in addition to a hard surface, resulting in less wear. Zinkers are easier to dismantle and reuse on new nets, yet another benefit to both the environment and economy.
Linimatics range includes a wide range of ring and barrel Zinkers from 50-2000 grams and with different hole diameters corresponding to current industry standards.
